In a music industry that is largely dying, the biggest savior it has right now is Guitar Hero and Rock Band. They’ve boosted music sales for Aerosmith, selling more than any other album they’ve released, and at a much higher price (see here for the crazy details).
I’ve become something of a Junkie, playing Guitar Hero more than I care to admit. It’s addictive and fun, and probably the saddest way I’ve ever worked up a sweat.
If you’re like me, and want to play even more, there are a bunch of online versions of the game, different ways to get some Guitar Hero going on your computer. I’ve looked through a lot of them, and here are my favorites. They’re all something of a Dance Dance Revolution/Guitar Hero hybrid, and are all a lot of fun.
Coolio Beat 2
Careful loading Coolio Beat at the office, it’s a bit loud… It’s a good one, though. You use number keys for the notes, and the backspace or space bar to strum. It has eight songs, and three different levels, all of which will certainly keep you occupied. It feels legitimate, and works really well.
Guitar Master
Presented by Addicting Games, Guitar Master is as addicting as it gets. You start with two possible songs, and then get more as you beat the songs. You use the letter keys to play, and it’s got all the feel of Guitar Hero as you play. This one, as a pure Guitar Hero clone, gets my vote as the best of the bunch.
Guitar Hero Widget
The Guitar Hero Widget IS the legit version, and appears to come straight from the Guitar Hero labs. It’s a widget you can put in a web page or on a dashboard, and it looks and plays exactly like Guitar Hero- right down to the noise at the beginning that sounds like Michael Jackson’s “Black or White.” You play with the number keys and the enter key is the strum key, much like Coolio Beat 2. This would be my favorite, but it only offers three songs, one at each level. Definitely a con, but it’s a fun one to goof around with.
Flash Flash Revolution
If Dance Dance Revolution is more your thing than Guitar Hero, Flash Flash Revolution is the way to go. It has a ton of songs at a ton of different difficulty levels and genres, and can keep you occupied forever. It gets REALLY hard really quickly, but it’s fast, quick-loading, fun, and well put together.
None of them are to the level of the real thing, but they’re all pretty good duplicates. If you’re away from your console, or just feel weird with the plastic guitar at work, these are for you. Make sure you’re wearing headphones, though- they’re all pretty loud. Have fun!
