I’m always on the lookout for things that are better than Google. Google seems to have a death-grip on all things search-related, and for the most part, they deserve it. There are, though, certain things that Google either doesn’t do well, or doesn’t do as well as someone else.
One of those things is searching for videos. For whatever reason, Google’s way of searching for, and especially showing, videos on the Web is not so great. Thankfully, I couldn’t care less now that I’ve found Videosurf.
Videosurf is purely a video search engine, but does it in a different way: When you first search for a video, enter a keyword you’re looking for: I tried David Cook. You see search results, but not the kind you’d expect.
The results are laid out for you, with thumbnauls of various points throughout the video. You can see what happens in the video, and figure out what’s actually in the video. Some people like to title videos with provocative things and then show something different- now you can see those coming and only watch the ones you want.
Videosurf pulls this off by using visual search, instead of just searching through the oft-unreliable tags and titles. Their search is much more applicable to searching for and within videos, and makes the searching process shorter and the watching part a lot longer.
You can see videos from any number of sources- YouTube to Crackle to MSN to Hulu. It’s a great place to search for viral videos, as well as more legit things like TV and movies. You can also sort videos by who you want to see in them: for David Cook, I could pare it down to Simon Coweel, Paula Abdul, and so on.
The thing I like about Videosurf is that it’s the best way to start with a lot of videos, and quickly pare them down to the one you want.
Why take my word for it, though? Here’s what the search results look like:

If finding videos is your game, then Videosurf’s the way to go. Take that, Google!
