For most online personalities, their username is their brand. Unless they’re famous outside the Web-world, or have a really cool name (I’m looking at you, Merlin Mann), many people have a username that becomes their brand everywhere online.
For me, it’s davep3355: Just about anywhere you see that screen name, regardless of where it is, how terrible the pictures are, or how many Disney videos are bookmarked, that’s me. I AM davep3355- I’ve got the screen name a number of places, and for the most part, a monopoly on its use.
If you’re just starting to create a web-personality, find a name like that. Do better than davep3355, but come up with a screen name or identity that will identify you as you, no matter what site people are on. Some people use their real names as one word, some use something totally different (you again, Merlin- your name’s just so cool). Find one you like, and stick with it.
To aid you in finding said great username is a website cleverly titled “Where is your Username registered“. I’m going to call it WIYUR, because it’s fun to say out loud.
WIYUR checks 69 different sites for any username you input. You simply type a username you use (or want to), and WIYUR checks to see on which sites that username is taken, and where it’s available. Here’s how it looked when I checked:
WIYUR missed only one here- Pandora, where I do have the username. Otherwise, though, it found where my username is taken, and where it’s available. If you want to find all the places I exist online, go to the site and search for davep3355, and click on any of the “Taken” links.
The whole concept of marketing yourself as a brand on the Internet is dependent on your being able to keep that brand consistent. Use WIYUR to find a screen name you can use just about anywhere, and make that you.
