I’m not a parent myself, but I know a lot of people who are (it’s, like, an epidemic). One of the biggest concerns many parents have is how to protect their kids from all of the awful stuff on the Internet, while still being able to use it for the great things it does offer. My young cousin just started emailing, and loves it, but her mom is afraid of all the things she can accidentally see just by being on the Internet.
Thankfully, there are some sites out there that are specifically geared to younger kids, and make the online experience much better for your wee ones. One great one is called Totlol, and is essentially a YouTube for the little kiddies.
Totlol is there for when you want to watch a video with your kids, but there’s nothing good on Nickelodeon (which is impossible, but I digress). Totlol features a huge number of parent-submitted and parent-screened videos that your kids can watch and enjoy with or without you.
The videos that Totlol has can also be found on YouTube, but with Totlol they’re filtered down to the appropriate stuff, and there’s no risk of your kid seeing something they shouldn’t.
Also like YouTube, most of the videos are short, and there’s a huge variety of them. There’s everything from Schoolhouse Rock episodes to one called “A Cat & a Box” which is so adorable I’ve got to show it to you:
You can favorite videos your kids love, or block ones you don’t want them seeing again. All videos are moderated, though, and are promised to be safe for your children’s eyes.
There’s also quite a bit of social interaction built into the site, though I have my doubts about the time parents of small kids have to interact on YouTube-like sites. But that’s just me. You can create a profile, connect with other parents, share videos with each other, and even screen them together.
The only thing that was obviously missing is a way to embed videos elsewhere. This could be a great site for parenting blogs and the like, but it doesn’t offer any way to show videos elsewhere. All videos are on YouTube, though, so you can find them there- except that somewhat defeats the purpose of Totlol. Do with that as you will.
You can upload a video, join the social fun, or just hang out and watch videos with your kids. For the small kid with a smaller attention span, with parents wanting five minutes of quiet, Totlol may be a sanity-saver.
