I’m going to start another series, this one every Sunday. After much thought and drafting, I’ve settled on “Sunday Tips”. Clever, I know. I smell a Pulitzer…
Basically, my hope here is to help people use the computer easier, faster, smarter, and more efficiently. I’m going to take it one application or product at a time, and give you ten tips to help you work faster and more easily. Ten tips, every week, over time should build into a solid repository.
Many of you will already know most or all of these, but I think that’s okay. Many people, I’m learning, don’t know even the most basic time-saving shortcuts, and I think they bear repeating for those who may have forgotten. If you already know all these, suggest another one in the comments!
It’s important to mention here that you know more useful tips than I do. I’m sure of it. So, that in mind, my hope is that the comment sections of these posts are going to be huge. Throw your own tips in there, learn from others, and so on. I want the comments to be more informative than my posts. That’s on you guys, I hope we get this going!
Since it’s the first week, I’ll start as basic as possible. Here are ten tips that apply to just about any program you use, on any computer (these are technically Windows-specific, but they all have obvious Mac counterparts):
1. “Control + B” bolds the text you’ve selected.
2. “Control + U” Underlines the text you’ve selected.
3. “Control + I” italicizes the text you’ve selected.
4. “Control + S” Saves the document, page, etc. you’re currently using.
5. “Control + N” Creates a new document, window, page or action.
6. “Control + O” Allows you to open a saved document, window, page or action.
7. “Alt + F4″ Exits the current window.
8. “Alt + Space + N” Minimizes the current window.
9. “Alt + Space + X” Maximizes the current window.
10. “Alt + Space + M” Allows you to move the current window using the keyboard.
What time-saving keyboard shortcuts do you use, that work in most applications?
