I think it’s fairly safe to assume that most people have iPods. If you don’t have one, find a buddy who does. They’ll help you realize how critical it is to the continuation of your existence.
If you need another reason to love iPods, there’s iSubway Maps. iSubway Maps is a new way to use your iPod to get your way around big cities, and another reason to give whoever’s buying it for you.
iSubway Maps has maps of the subways, metros, undergrounds and other transport systems for a number of major cities around the world- from Berlin, Bilbao and Boston to Toronto, Seoul, and New York. Maps are made into groups of images, placed in .zip files, and made ready for your download. All you need to do is download the photos, sync to your iPod, and navigate away.
The subway systems are broken down into a series of images, which you can follow to find your way around. For some cities, iSubway Maps is using a license from the governments; others are done through research, websites, and the like. In my opinion (and in theirs) it’s at least as good as the city-drawn maps, in almost every situation.
Each city is free to download, and you’re told the iPods for which it can be downloaded- in reality, though, any of the formats will work for nearly any iPod. The difference is that iPhone maps are in .png format, while others are .jpg. There’s little real difference, and most maps should work regardless of your iPod.
iSubway Maps works on any iPods with photo support, which is any iPod not in black and white. Syncing photos is easy, and iSubway Maps has a great list of instructions on how to do so.
If you’re lost in a big city, all you’ll need is your iPod. Using iSubway Maps, you’ll never be lost again, whether you’re in New York, Paris, Moscow, or Melbourne.
