Many people (myself included) love online task managers. They have tons of features, make me feel great about myself, and always give me a system to tweak to deter from my actual productivity.
But sometimes, you just need to make a list- you want to write things down, do them, and check them off. No frills, no crazy features, just a list. For that, things like Remember the Milk, Toodledo, and GTD as a whole fall somewhat short. A few applications, though, do a great job of giving you a way to make a list, and preventing you from getting lost in listing.
Doomi, or Doomi Now (its more-than-slightly suggestive alternative name) is one such service. The name is "Do Me Now," and is a valiant effort to get on the FAIL blog, as developer John claims.
Despite its name, Doomi is a killer list-making service. It’s an Adobe AIR app, which means it runs on your desktop through Adobe’s runtime environment. That means there’s a good deal of offline usability, which is a key feature for a lot of people.
To install Doomi, just go to the website and click install. It’ll install AIR if you need it, or just Doomi. Once you install and run Doomi, you get this:
It’s that easy. No set-up, no time to create your system. Just start making your list. Type as many to-dos as you want, and you’re going. When you complete a task, you check off the box to the left of the task. That’s it. It really is that simple.
You can optionally set reminders for each task- 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, 8 hours, or 1 day. If you’re setting reminders for things due in more than a day, Doomi’s not for you. You can also set Doomi to show or hide the tasks you’ve marked as completed, to help track your progress.
When you minimize Doomi, it goes to your system tray, where it sits unnoticed until you need it again. It’s designed to only be in your face when you need it to be, and to be simple to the point of taking no time to use- which, of course, is the whole point. Less time making your lists means more time checking things off (but seriously, what’s the fun in that?)
If you’re looking for a full-fledged, long-term task manager, you might want more than Doomi offers. If what you want is to make a list, check it twice, and motor through your tasks, Doomi’s got you covered.
