Your Life in Lists with Listography

I keep lists. Surprise, right? Lists of things to do, blog posts, places to go, diseases to cure, and all kinds of other things I’d like to take credit for one day.

I’m always on the lookout for a website or application that can hang onto all of my lists, and let me deal with them in a useful way. New to that category is Listography, a fun and social way to manage and share all the lists you could possibly make.

Listography requires a quick, free signup to get going, and then you’re opened to a number of great features. First is making lists- it’s as easy as clicking “Create list,” giving the list a title and category, and adding things. For every new item on a list, start it with an asterisk (the * above the 8 key), and Listography formats it for you. There are also more advanced formatting options, a list of which you can see.

Listography encourages you to make lists other than just a to-do list, but allows you to make whatever you want. Lists you’ll see around the site are things like “My biggest pet peeves” and “what I’ll remember about my grandmother.” Listography wants to be a place for you to make biographical and personal lists, in addition to the ones you make for your day-to-day life.

The lists you make are endless, and can be named anything you want. The categories are numerous and vague, and you’ll certainly be able to find a category for all your lists. My hit list? Fits right in with “Relationships.”

In addition to editing your lists, you can edit a lot about your personal page- upload a background image, a profile picture, or change the domain name (the site URL) of your Listography page. All those options and more can be found in the “Settings” section of your account.

My favorite feature of Listography is how good it is at giving you new lists to make. Take, for instance, the “someone new” button. Every time you click, you’re taken to a random person’s Listography account (you can make lists private if you don’t want others to see yours), and you can see what they’ve done on their page. It’s a great way to come up with lists to make for yourself, as well as useful additions to some of your similar lists.

For further motivation for list-making, there’s a fun button that says “generate a list topic” whenever you create a new list. It comes up with a topic and category for you, and then you fill in the details. In two clicks, the topics chosen were “worst dates so far” and “performers I’ve seen live.”

Listography’s so versatile and simple that you can use it for anything you want- it’s great for keeping and sharing everything from a to-do list to a list of movies you’d like to see this weekend. Every list is as long, short, simple or complicated as you want it to be- there’s no unnecessary clutter to the site at all.

List-making in this sense is a fun way to keep memories, to make a memoir of sorts for yourself without a lot of work. Listography’s a great tool for keeping lists of all types, and helping spark your creative list-making juices when you need it.
