Lessons From Moving All My Gadgets

Lessons From Moving All My Gadgets

Post by David Pierce. Find me on Twitter.

I’ve moved a lot in the last few years – that’s part of the nature of being in college, I guess. But, this past week, my family moved completely for the first time in a while. That meant that for the first time in a while I was responsible not just for my computer, clothes and beer, but for moving everything.

Along the packing, moving and unpacking journey, I’ve learned a few things about how to make moving easier, more productive, and how to use moving to improve a few things. Moving’s a pain, but it definitely doesn’t have to be as bad as we make it.

At the same time, though, my moving experience hasn’t been nearly as good as it could have been. I’m going to be moving again in a few weeks (a story for another day), and I’m looking for your best tips as well. How do you make moving better, particularly using technology?

How to Digitize Your TV Watching

How to Digitize Your TV Watching

For all the technological options out there, TV doesn’t seem likely to be unseated as the relaxation pastime of choice – I’m watching it right now, actually.  (Side note: Pineapple Express? Not a good movie.) But for as much time as we spend watching and interacting with our TVs, it’s a surprisingly outdated and inefficient technology.

TV requires its own, annoying remote, can’t always handle apps or find content, and generally fails at helping you find what you’re looking for. Plus, most TVs are missing out on all the great things that we’re afforded by being connected to the Web.

Lenovo ThinkCentre a63 Desktop Review (Plus: Want to Win it?)

Lenovo ThinkCentre a63 Desktop Review (Plus: Want to Win it?)

(Before we get going, just a heads up: sometime this week, you’re going to have a chance to win this computer, and all the awesomeness that comes with it. Read the review, and stick around this week to find out how!)

A couple of months ago, Lenovo (working with a great company called Ivy Worldwide) sent me a computer to try, evaluate, and tell you about. The ThinkCentre a63 is designed with small-business owners in mind, and since I in fact own a business (this thing called Digitizd – ever heard of it?) I’m a good person to take a look at it. They sent me the desktop tower and two monitors, and told me to have at it.

For the most part, I’m extremely impressed with this machine. There are a few things I’m not a fan of (I’ll get to those in a second), but for the most part it’s a smart, simple, inexpensive machine that would work perfectly in most settings, particularly small business. Why do I say that, you ask? Good question: let’s dig in.

Why I Bought an iPad (And Why You Should Too)

Why I Bought an iPad (And Why You Should Too)

Exactly 32 hours after the iPad was released to the masses, I walked over to the Apple Store on 5th Avenue in New York City. I stood in a line of about 40 people, walked down the spiral staircase feeling like the belle of the ball, plunked down $520 or so, and bought myself an iPad.

I’d never actually done that before. I’m typically a “wait and see-er” when it comes to anything that costs more than $5, and like to be a version behind because it’s too easy and too expensive to get caught up in being an early adopter. But the iPad was different.

The biggest question most people have for the iPad is simple: “what will I use it for?” It’s bigger and less pocket-friendly than your cell phone. It’s smaller and less versatile than your laptop. It’s not really a netbook, or an ebook reader. So what is it, and why do I need it?

How I Work

Post by David Pierce. Find me on Twitter.

This is a long-overdue post for me. I even promised to write this post tomorrow, five weeks ago. But, at long last, this is the full explication of how it is that I get things done.

The first thing I should tell you is that this is an ever-evolving system. There are a few things, hardware and software, that have been around for a while, but there’s also a rapidly revolving door of applications, gadgets, and all sorts of things that come and go from my desk. What I’m sharing here is a snapshot, a look into the things that make me tick and keep me ticking right now.

I share these things not because they’re unique, or even particularly interesting. I do it because I’ve gotten so much from reading how other people organize, get things done, and work – this is me giving back, so to speak. And here we go!

11 Great Apps for iPod Touch Owners

11 Great Apps for iPod Touch Owners

January 21, 2010  |  Awesome Apps, Gadgets  |  View Comments

Post by David Pierce. Find me on Twitter.

I don’t own an iPhone—I have an iPod Touch. Every list of “Best iPhone apps” includes a lot of apps that are totally useless to those of us without constant Internet connection. Do you see the problem here?

For an application to be great for the iPod Touch, it needs to meet a few criteria: it has to have excellent offline capabilities, as well as fully-functioning online usage when you’re connected to Wi-fi. It has to be simple to use, because many Touch owners aren’t super tech-savvy. And, last but not least, it has to make your Touch a lean, mean, awesomeness machine. Which is a totally objective measure, I promise.

The unfortunate (and expensive) thing about getting into technology is that it’s a seriously vicious cycle: you buy a cool gadget, realize how awesome it is, and then suddenly there’s a new one. “If this one was awesome,” you think to yourself, “how much more awesome must the next one be?” And then, one life-savings later, you realize it’s everything you dreamed of. Until the next one.

It’s a problem. But gdgt, one of my new favorite sites—it’s been around a while, but I’m only just getting into it—is a great place to turn for all your gadget needs, from figuring out which one to buy, to finding out how to make the most of ones you already have (or maybe even tucked in a drawer somewhere.
