I don’t own an iPhone—I have an iPod Touch. Every list of “Best iPhone apps” includes a lot of apps that are totally useless to those of us without constant Internet connection. Do you see the problem here?
For an application to be great for the iPod Touch, it needs to meet a few criteria: it has to have excellent offline capabilities, as well as fully-functioning online usage when you’re connected to Wi-fi. It has to be simple to use, because many Touch owners aren’t super tech-savvy. And, last but not least, it has to make your Touch a lean, mean, awesomeness machine. Which is a totally objective measure, I promise.

The unfortunate (and expensive) thing about getting into technology is that it’s a seriously vicious cycle: you buy a cool gadget, realize how awesome it is, and then suddenly there’s a new one. “If this one was awesome,” you think to yourself, “how much more awesome must the next one be?” And then, one life-savings later, you realize it’s everything you dreamed of. Until the next one.
It’s a problem. But gdgt, one of my new favorite sites—it’s been around a while, but I’m only just getting into it—is a great place to turn for all your gadget needs, from figuring out which one to buy, to finding out how to make the most of ones you already have (or maybe even tucked in a drawer somewhere.

I’m a bit of a gadget fiend. I had this terrible trend of always buying the one-behind gadget to save money, and then having constant, crippling gadget envy that would force me to upgrade—always right before a new one came out. It’s a vicious cycle.
But this time, I made the smart choice. I went out and said “to heck with you, money! I’m going to get whatever phone my little heart desires.” I went and tested just about every phone Verizon has (because a phone’s no good without decent service, AT&T), and eventually bought the Droid Eris. I’ve now had it for a few days, and let me tell you – I couldn’t be happier.

After three years of ownership, my old laptop, when it was plugged in, was fantastic. It was fast, bright, and worked great. Then, the moment it came unplugged from the wall, all hell broke loose. First came the race to find another plug somewhere in the three minutes before the battery died, or to see if it would hibernate before the battery died, possibly destroying all my files.
Not a good situation. But it’s an avoidable one—there are simple ways to make your battery live longer (like, 3 years instead of 6 months), and last longer (like, 4 hours instead of 8 seconds).

I love Christmas. For a million reasons—one of them is the inordinate amount of food I get to eat. Another is that it’s the only time egg nog is an acceptable thing to drink. But one of my favorite things is not only getting presents, but deciding what it is that I want.
It’s always more difficult than it ought to be, and I’m always late (much to the chagrin of my whole family)so this year, I’m not only making my list early, but I’m going to share it with all of you, just in case the geek in your life is too busy coding to create a list for themselves.

This post was originally my column for this week in my school newspaper, The Cavalier Daily. But it’s too appropriate for The 2.0 Life to not put up here.
The one thing I have with me at all times isn’t a notebook, or my laptop, or underwear – it’s my cell phone. It lives in my pocket at all times, and if I’m without it for more than about 10 minutes, I begin to slowly lose my mind.
My phone’s not an iPhone, or even a particularly cool smartphone; it’s just a regular old phone. I have, though, learned a few cool tips and tricks for how to get the most out of my phone, and I’m going to share a bunch of them with you. If you’ve got a phone that makes calls and sends text messages, these tips are for you. (If your phone can’t do those things, I’m not saying you definitely got ripped off, but if the shoe fits…)

First of all, thanks so much to all those who entered the contest we’ve been running here over the last several days. There were over 1,000 entries, with tons of funny jokes, rude names, and all manner of extra awesomeness.
I’ll be posting some of the best info, both answers to the questions (thing you wish your computer would do, application you wish existed) as well as some of the funniest jokes you told (there were a TON of good ones), on the companion site to The 2.0 Life, The 2.0 Life+.
Unfortunately, however, I can only pick one winner. And that winner is, drumroll please:

Of course you do.
It’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for! The 2.0 Life is giving away two (count ‘em: two) computers, an awesome bag, and some great software to boot. All in all, it’s worth well over $1,000.
This bundle makes for a powerful, portable, always-in-sync system for anyone who ever needs a computer when they’re not at their desk. It’s the ideal situation for students, professionals, soccer moms, lacrosse dads, and, well, people in general.
